The comprehensive group exhibition at Murals Inc. in Rotterdam will present from 29th of march 2026 on new artworks from all over the world, becoming part of a unique collection: The M-Collection<\/em>. As Murals Inc. Agency increasingly focusses on commissions and large-scale projects, this exhibition presents studio works that emerge from and reflect the artists\u2019 mural practices. The M-Collection<\/em> offers visitors with an interest in mural art an insight into the versatility of the medium, while also highlighting the expertise and creative strength within the network of Mural Inc.. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

More than 85 mural artists from the Netherlands and abroad will present their studio works in the space of Mural Inc.. All participating artists are part of the agencies\u2019 artist roster, representing both the established art world and the urban scene. On this special occasion, the artworks will be presented on-site-responsive murals painted by Jan van der Ploeg, Johannes Mundinger (see interview below), and Marije Vermeulen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Marleen van Wijngaarden, Creative Director Murals Inc., explains the concept:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201eI call it a collection, but the idea behind it is the following: the Murals Inc. database contains 120 artists. I have collaborated with most of them through exhibitions,<\/em> Since we also have a large platform, or through projects and commissions. With others, I have not yet worked together. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

With this exhibition, The M-Collection, I want to draw attention to our full roster, because it is not clearly visible on the website.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Each artist presents one studio work with a maximum size of 1 m\u00b2. Together, these works form a compact, diverse, and surprising cross-section of the artistic practices connected to Murals Inc. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Three artists, <\/em>Jan van der Ploeg, Johannes Mundinger, and Marije Vermeulen, <\/em>have been invited to create a mural on which all the studio works will be installed.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

During Rotterdam Art Week, and in the five months that follow, The M-Collection offers a carefully curated overview of current developments within mural painting. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

By presenting studio work in an exhibition context, the show reveals how monumental practices translate into smaller, autonomous works. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The exhibition contributes to a deeper discourse on mural art and positions the medium firmly within the broader field of contemporary art.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Murals Inc. is, at its essence, an agency dedicated to contemporary mural painting, occasionally extending its focus into studio practices.\u201c<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Interview with Johannes Mundinger, Berlin, March 2026.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Hello Johannes! I read that you created a wall painting on site for \u201cThe M-Collection\u201d. Were you already familiar with the venue and the agency in Rotterdam beforehand?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Three years ago, in 2023, I was invited by Marleen Van Wijngaarden to a small group exhibition to exhibit alongside Marie Aly, Jasper van der Graaf and Rtue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An exhibition at Murals Inc means that each artist paints a wall in the exhibition space. Our exhibition was a small premiere; in our case, canvas works were also shown, as well as some of my small glass paintings. As Murals Inc does not normally hold sales exhibitions, travel, accommodation and an exhibition fee were paid for us artists, which I think is very fair (especially as, in my case, there were also sales).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How big is your current indoor wall painting for \u2018The M-Collection\u2019 and how long did you spend working on site?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As all artists listed on the Murals Inc. website are invited to take part in this group exhibition, a total of 85 works are on display, one per artist. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alongside me, Jan van der Ploeg and Marije Vermeulen have painted walls. Our painted walls also serve as a backdrop for the submitted works. That is how I was invited, and I have positioned my mural mainly at the top, under the ceiling. Individual elements in it extend downwards, over the wall, and thus interact with the works displayed on it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Is one of your studio works included? Did you select it, and if so, based on what criteria?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A small work of mine is also on display in the exhibition\u2014probably my smallest painting, a reverse-glass painting measuring 15 x 10 cm, which I chose to contrast with the size of the wall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Are the works in the exhibition for sale? Or will they remain there as part of the collection and have they been purchased?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The paintings can also be purchased. Murals Inc. usually uses the exhibitions to showcase the diversity of the muralists they represent, so they organise exhibitions that feature only murals, not \u2018studio works\u2019. As I\u2019ve just read, my painting was bought straight away, even before the opening. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What sort of premises does the agency have there? A large, bright building with white-walled offices and wide corridors, and murals everywhere? Or are the murals painted over again?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The exhibition space is the large office of a Rotterdam-based architectural firm, a long room with varying ceiling heights. The murals are painted over after the exhibitions, which run roughly every six months, and replaced with new ones. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Does this agency open up new opportunities for collaboration for you? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019m curious to see how things develop. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

You\u2019ve been active for a long time and have created murals in many countries. Since when, actually?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I grew up near the French border, where I made new friends through painting. That\u2019s how I ended up going abroad to paint walls quite early on. At first, it was mostly self-organised events, small group trips or graffiti jams. My first commissioned piece was in 2011 in G\u00f6rlitz on the I-Bug.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

How do you view current developments in the field of mural painting? Are there more clients than there used to be? Have conditions changed over the last 20 years? <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

What has definitely changed is that many small local authorities have discovered mural painting as a tourist attraction and are organising small mural festivals. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I can\u2019t say much about general trends, but for me personally there have been significant changes. Up until the 2020 pandemic, I was travelling internationally for numerous exhibitions and mural projects. With the pandemic came a slump in mural work, and exhibition work took precedence. Now I paint on walls far less often, but these commissioned works are paid more. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What artistic trends can you observe in the scene in this area?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As always, social changes are reflected in art, and so the presence of digital media influences the motifs: when computer-generated elements are incorporated, such as blurring, cuts, overlays, etc. And when documenting murals, they are often shown from perspectives that are impossible for a passer-by to see, but are achieved through drone footage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What I find interesting is that many people who create murals have tended to have studied design rather than have attended an art academy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
