Street Dreams Festival 2023
The Street Dreams Festival will take place in Essen-Katernberg from 26 to 29 October. The event will take place at various locations, including PACT WerkStadt and PACT Zollverein.
The festival focuses on urban art, graffiti, rap and hip-hop dance and explores themes and social challenges relevant to urban life. Street Dreams presents itself as a festival for urban art, the Ruhr region and its hip-hop culture and is a cooperation between Pottporus – Centre for Hip-Hop Culture, PACT Zollverein and is funded by the Ministry of Culture and Science of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia as part of the New Arts Ruhr programme.
The main venues are the streets of Essen-Katernberg with PACT’s WerkStadt as the festival centre. International artists, local artists from the Ruhr region and citizens of Essen will work together to create new murals and graffiti in the neighbourhood and in local shops. In addition, the basement of PACT WerkStadt will become an exhibition space for painting, drawing, installation and printmaking.
The diverse festival programme invites you to look, listen, discuss, inspire and actively participate. Four days of free events for all, including hip-hop-themed film screenings at the legendary Viktoria-Klause, a family-friendly dance event on Festival Sunday with hip-hop, trip-hop and soul by Nilua, and performances by DJs such as C:mone, Laaametta and others. The festival also offers the opportunity to talk to the artists and learn or perfect hip-hop skills at dance and street art workshops for children and young people. The Lyricist Lounge Ruhr offers live rap from newcomers and veterans of the Ruhr’s diverse hip-hop scene. For those who like to discover new things, there are street art tours and an urban art library, and for those who like it cosy, relaxed corning with live rap by Dein Couseng.
As part of the festival, the Urban Art Ensemble Ruhr presents its world premiere on 28 October at 8 pm with the piece “CRACKS” in a hip-hop choreography by breaking legend Rauf “RubberLegz” Yasit.
