abandonded area and the “rucker park” in shanghai

, by Bart Van Kersavond

the next 2 days were a bit frustrating: I wanted to find more street art spontaneously and walked around a lot. because it was difficult to find anything unexpectedly, I searched the internet for a few tips that didn’t really bring me much further. but I did find some older, unoccupied neighborhoods. there’s an interesting article here on the topic of “modernization in shanghai”.

my time was running out, so I looked up a couple addresses on google and went to visit some of them with a motor taxi. one of the stops was rucker park, described as a local meeting place for street ball and graffiti enthusiasts. when I got there, it was already dark and was raining heavily. a few people were playing basketball in a gym and there was only a bit of graffiti about. I asked two guys whether there was any other graffiti to be found around there. the conversation didn’t really help me any further, but one of them tried his best to help me. finally, I arranged to meet up with him (his french name was nicolas) and go out searching together the next day.
