RIP DUHS 16.04.1976 – 05.07.2019

, by Katja Aksenenka

Honor those who deserve honor!

The Berlin graffiti legend DUHS from Neukölln has been painting in various crews, including the MSB and DAT crew, since the 1990s. Even though he hadn’t been working illegally since the 2000s, you could still meet DUHS regularly at the Halls of Fame. After a long illness DUHS died on July 5th, 2019 and left a void on the walls and in the souls of all his friends, colleagues, crew members, which the Berlin scene tried to fill with color and styles. At various writer meetings at Mauerpark, Priesterweg, at the old fire station and also at other halls, numerous works were created in honor of DUHS, the resonance of which on social media channels underlines its importance in the Berlin spray scene.

TICK campaign at Lankwitz S-Bahn station

One of the area-wise and stylistically sophisticated actions after the day of the death of DUHS is that of the Berlin writer TICK, who has been active in the crews CMD, DH, 12V and Vapeilas, partly since the mid-90s. Not only because of the long-standing acquaintance in the scene, also because of the pleasant personality of DUHS, TICK designed a wall in South Berlin to commemorate him:

“I met him around 2008 and always found him to be a pleasant, sociable person who liked to chat over a beer. You could laugh with him, but you could also talk about personal and scene-critical issues. “

TICK – as he had called himself since the 90s and also belongs to the artist collective “Team Black Berlin”, is one of the continuously active Berlin writers. For almost 30 years, TICK has been fighting for its creative space in the city either with trainwriting or installations in public places. In a city that has to continue to lose its spatial freedom and that surveillance systems restrict the aesthetic scope for action. The position at the S-Bahn station in Lankwitz also required a certain amount of preparation:

“I met him around 2008 and always found him to be a pleasant, sociable person who liked to chat over a beer. You could laugh with him, but you could also talk about personal and scene-critical issues. “

The idea and its implementation

The concrete idea came up during the campaign itself. The painting of the wall, which was structured with vertical grooves, and the lack of “equipment” – “no painter’s telescopic pole, but only a 1.50 meter stick from my mop” Painting the approximately 4 meter high wall as quite difficult.

“I decided to add a 3D installation – a 1 m long plastic “Time” lettering. I had chosen a suitable saying for the lettering with which I wanted to integrate the 3D effect. Even with a ladder it was not easy to write the “YOU LIFE TWICE” in the top row so that the “TIME” lettering could be affixed in the middle of the free space under the written sentence with concrete adhesive. “

The piece of art created in honor of the Writer DUHS in the form of a piece and a plastic installation can now still be viewed at the Lankwitz S-Bahn station. Who knows how long the self-authorized work will remain.
