Urban Art Biennale 2026 – First Impressions | Völklinger Hütte

, by Bart Van Kersavond

On 6 May, a preview of the 2026 Urban Art Biennale took place at the Völklinger Hütte — the exhibition runs until 15 November. Not everything had been installed yet, but the scale of what was already on display was impressive.

Following two biennales that had extended far into the urban space of Völklingen, the focus in 2026 is once again more strongly on the steelworks itself. More works than ever before are being created in situ — designed specifically for their location, in dialogue with the architecture and history of the former ironworks.

In the Möllerhalle, 55 artists from 17 countries come together in a dynamic dialogue between industrial architecture and contemporary art: the hall’s rugged charm meets delicate installations and large-scale interventions that reinterpret the space and impressively highlight its unique atmosphere.
